What we collect, who sees it.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

HonoReel is operated by Reciprocity LLC, a Michigan limited liability company. When we say “we,” “us,” or “HonoReel” on this page, we mean Reciprocity LLC. This policy explains what we collect, why, who else touches it, and how to get it removed.

What we collect

  • Organizers (you): account email and name (via Clerk), the reels you create, and your activity inside them.
  • Contributors: the name and contact info (email and/or mobile number) used to invite them, and whatever they choose to include in their honor - message text, photos, videos, documents, and optionally a donation amount and cause.
  • Honorees: the name and (where provided) contact info an organizer enters when setting up a reel. For surprise reels, this information is never used to contact or notify the honoree until the organizer chooses to present.
  • Email events: when an invite was sent, delivered, opened, or bounced. This comes from Resend webhooks and helps you know who got their invite.
  • SMS events: delivery status, opt-out status, and HELP/STOP replies for any text messages we send through Twilio.
  • Payment data: HonoReel does not collect or store donor card information. Donations route through Every.org, which acts as the merchant of record and handles all card data. Any future premium payments are processed by Stripe; card details go directly to Stripe and never touch our servers.
  • Server logs: standard request logs (IP address, browser, timestamp, URL) retained for a short window to debug and protect the service.

Who can see what

  • Honors before approval: visible only to the organizer of the reel and the contributor who wrote them.
  • Approved honors: visible to the honoree once the reel is presented, plus anyone the honoree shares the presentation link with.
  • Rejected or hidden content: never reaches the honoree, even after presentation.
  • Surprise reels: the honoree is never linked, notified, or mentioned to themselves until the organizer presents the reel.

SMS messages

When an organizer invites someone by phone number, we send a transactional SMS through Twilio to deliver the invite link. Federal rules and mobile carriers require us to be explicit about how this works:

  • We only send SMS to numbers an organizer enters when they invite someone. We don't buy phone numbers, scrape them, or send marketing texts.
  • Reply STOP to any HonoReel message to opt out of further messages from us. Reply HELP for assistance. Standard message and data rates from your carrier may apply.
  • Mobile numbers and opt-in / opt-out status are never sold, rented, or shared with third parties for their own marketing.
  • Message frequency depends on the reel - typically one invite, plus a reminder if there's no response.

Organizers who supply phone numbers represent that they have permission to contact those people on our behalf.

AI features

A few HonoReel features use Anthropic's Claude API to help organizers and contributors write - prompt suggestions for a new reel, writing assist for a contributor who's stuck, and (on premium reels) optional proofreading.

  • When you use one of these features, the relevant text (your draft message, the reel occasion, the honoree name) is sent to Anthropic to generate the suggestion and is returned to you. Nothing else from your account is sent.
  • Under Anthropic's API terms, content sent to the Claude API is not used to train Anthropic's models.
  • We don't use your honor content to train any AI model of our own, and we don't share it with any AI provider other than as described above.
  • All AI calls run server-side from our API. Your account token is never exposed to a third-party model.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell your data, run ads against it, or share it with third parties beyond the service providers listed below.
  • We don't expose reels in a public discovery feed. Reels are shared by link.
  • We don't take a cut of charitable donations. Every.org issues the tax receipt; the full disbursed amount reaches the cause minus standard payment processing fees.
  • We don't train AI models on your honors or media.

Service providers we use

HonoReel relies on a small set of vetted services to operate. Each only receives the data needed to do its job.

  • Clerk - organizer authentication and session management.
  • Neon (PostgreSQL) - our primary database.
  • Cloudflare R2 and Stream - photo, document, and video storage and delivery.
  • Resend - transactional email.
  • Twilio - transactional SMS.
  • Anthropic - the AI features described above.
  • Every.org - charitable donations (merchant of record).
  • Stripe - non-donation payments (e.g. premium reels).
  • Lulu - print-on-demand book fulfillment, when an organizer orders a printed reel.
  • Fly.io and Vercel - hosting for our API and web app.

Memorial reels

A memorial reel honors someone who has died. We treat these with extra care: we never create an account for, send email to, or attempt to link a profile to a deceased honoree. The organizer is the only data subject we treat as the user of the reel. Family members who would like a memorial reel removed can contact us at the address below and we'll verify the request and act on it.

Children and minors

HonoReel is intended for people 13 and older. If you are under 18, you may only use HonoReel with the involvement and consent of a parent or legal guardian. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted information to us, please email hello@honoreel.com and we will delete it.

How long we keep data

  • Reels and honorsare kept as long as the organizer's account is active, or until the organizer or contributor deletes them.
  • Account data is kept until you ask us to delete it. Deletion requests are processed within 30 days.
  • Server logs are kept for up to 90 days for security and debugging, then rotated out.
  • Email and SMS delivery records are kept for up to 12 months so organizers can see whether their invitations reached the recipient.
  • Donation records are kept indefinitely for tax and audit purposes (Every.org keeps its own independent record and issues your receipt).

Cookies and analytics

We use the session cookies set by Clerk to keep you signed in. We do not run third-party analytics, advertising trackers, or behavioral cookies. We do not have a cross-site tracking pixel.

Your privacy rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to do any of the following:

  • Tell you what personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct information that's inaccurate.
  • Delete your account and the data associated with it.
  • Export a copy of your data.

If you live in California, the CCPA gives you additional rights - the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not “sell” or “share” personal information as those terms are defined under California law, so there's no opt-out link to provide. If you're a California resident and want to exercise any of these rights, email us at the address below.

We will verify your identity before acting on a rights request (typically by confirming control of the email address on the account) and respond within the time required by applicable law.

Removing your data

Contributors can rescind their honor at any time before the reel is presented; this hard-deletes the honor and any media attached. Organizers can reject any honor or hide individual attachments. For full account or reel deletion, email hello@honoreel.com and we'll complete the deletion within 30 days. Some records may persist in backups for a short additional window before being purged.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where the change affects how your data is handled, notify active organizers by email at least 14 days before it takes effect.
